Lesson #6 from Living with an Olympian

Never give up.

Due to the 1980 Moscow Olympics boycott, the U.S. water polo team stayed on for the 1984 games, leaving no room for younger players like my husband.

When an opportunity arose to play with the 1988 team, he jumped at it, and they won the silver medal in Seoul.

He never gave up.

Three years before the 1984 Olympics, my brother realized he wouldn’t make the team, so he left behind his UCLA scholarship to train with Kurt Thomas, who believed in his potential.

He made the Olympic team, winning gold, silver, and two bronze medals.

He never gave up.

I know these years living with a teenager can be brutal.

It’s harder than ever.

They’re vicious one moment and sweet the next.

Long gone are the days they smushed your face between their hands and said, “Mommy, I love you so much.”

But they need you.

So, keep showing up, even when it’s challenging.

And never give up on yourself or them.
