Lessons from living with an Olympian

1988 Olympic Games, Opening Ceremonies, USA Water Polo Team

Lessons from living with an Olympian:
It’s the journey, not the destination.

Why is it that so often, when we reach a goal, our happiness only lasts for a moment?

What about the days, months, or even years it took to achieve it?

Were you engaged and joyful during your journey or overwhelmed and frustrated?

Our culture is wired to think achievement = success = happiness.

But is that true?

This focus on achievement has contributed to an epidemic of stress and anxiety among our children.

It’s all about getting into a specific college, landing the right job, having a perfect body, or being a star athlete.

Our children are so focused on achieving a result that they miss out on the golden nuggets in front of them.

Are you showing your child how to enjoy the journey?

Or are most of your conversations centered around a future outcome?

By focusing on today, we can connect more deeply to our children.

Having goals is natural and healthy.

But what we’re pursuing is the feeling we’ll have after we’ve achieved our goal.

Joy.

Elation.

Triumph.

Exhilaration.

Happiness.

How can you bring that feeling into your and your child’s lives today?

Make right now the most important moment versus waiting to be happy in the future.

The real magic lies in the journey, not the destination.
